O PAPEL DA MÍDIA E A CULPABILIZAÇÃO DA VÍTIMA EM CASOS DE FEMINICÍDIO - Análise do caso Eloá Cristina

Abstract

The high rate of femicide and violence against women present throughout society demonstrates how gender inequality is extremely harmful to the female population, not only in Brazil, but throughout the world. Crimes against women continue to be exaggeratedly romanticized by the media, sold as merchandise and entertainment. Through this, this study seeks to point out as problematic the blaming of the victim by the media in these cases. In particular, to analyze the crime committed against the young Eloá Cristina, who had her life taken by her ex-boyfriend, turning the whole case into a spectacle publicized by newspapers at the time, where her kidnapping and subsequent murder were broadcast live, with the attention of all over the country focused on television. That said, it can be considered that the media with its wide degree of influence is an informal institution of the judicial system, which condemns and declares innocence. Therefore, the work carried out discusses the problems caused by sensationalist and patriarchal action when reporting cases of feminicide and gender violence in society, the downgrading of the condition of women, extreme by violence and death, inserted in the culture of male domination. The vast bibliography, as well as the qualitative research and the historical method, prove that the media and society do not address these issues in a coherent and humanized way. Thus, in addition to laws to fight crimes against women, structural changes are needed in society and stricter inspections in the media, so that the media does not go beyond its informative role, only in this way will progress and possible gender equality be achieved.
